Social Play in Development

Social Play in Development
Engaging in social play may come naturally for some children, while others may need extra support in this area. For many children with autism, social play doesn’t always come intuitively—they may join an activity without fully understanding how to participate and quickly lose interest. While it’s important to respect each child’s autonomy, gently encouraging social play during their developmental years can bring lasting benefits for growth and learning.
In ABA therapy, we support this development by breaking down complex activities into manageable steps or adapting games to meet each child’s needs. One of our team members works one-on-one with the child, providing guidance and encouragement in a safe and supportive setting. As the child’s confidence grows, we gradually increase the complexity and introduce new challenges, helping them strengthen social skills that carry over into real group play experiences.
It is especially rewarding to witness this transformation—from a child once hesitant to engage in social activities to one who participates with enthusiasm and begins developing meaningful social connections.
