When families first notice signs of autism, they often begin searching immediately for support options to help their child. ABA therapy is one of the most common services families pursue. However, the time between recognizing symptoms and actually starting therapy can feel long and overwhelming.

One major hurdle is that, in Michigan, a formal autism diagnosis is required for insurance to cover ABA therapy. While some ABA providers accept private pay, most families depend on insurance to cover the cost of services, making the autism evaluation an essential step. At the same time, research shows that ABA therapy is most effective when started as early as possible in a child’s development — which is why timely access is so critical.

To address these challenges, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) introduced updates in 2024 to help families get started more quickly:

The Bridge Authorization

One of the most significant updates is the option of a bridge authorization. This is a temporary approval from BCBSM that allows children to begin ABA therapy before completing a full diagnostic evaluation.

This process ensures children don’t lose valuable time during a critical developmental window. While the full evaluation is still required, a bridge authorization allows families to move forward with therapy without facing long delays. This update is especially valuable for families eager to access ABA therapy services as soon as possible. We can help you navigate the steps needed to request a bridge authorization and guide you through the process.

Approved Autism Evaluation Centers in Michigan

Before January 1, 2024, families were required to schedule an evaluation exclusively at an Approved Autism Evaluation Center (AAEC). After that date, BCBSM expanded the options, allowing families to use certain non-AAEC, independent providers for initial evaluations. These may include pediatricians, developmental pediatricians, neurologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and speech and language therapists. This update helps shorten the process for families. Contact us for more details on how to find independent providers.
