Having a fixed and limited range of interests is a common characteristic often observed in individuals with autism. This may also be accompanied by a reluctance to engage in new or group activities. This behavior is not inherently problematic—developing a person’s autonomy and honoring their right to make independent choices is fundamental. There are likely several underlying reasons for their decisions that may be hard to communicate.
At Avanza ABA, we do recognize that it is not always feasible or appropriate to allow a child to have everything they want. However, if our goal is to build a meaningful relationship, we must first earn their trust. The initial phase of our compassionate, person-centered approach includes conducting a “Preference Assessment.”
The Preference Assessment is an essential step in high-quality, compassionate ABA therapy. It enhances decision-making skills and encourages communication through combined practice of another critical and empowering skill—expressing a clear and respectful “No.”
During the initial therapy sessions, our skilled technicians spend a large portion of time presenting a broad range of activities and promptly withdrawing those that the person declines by vocalizing “no,” using sign language, or signaling refusal with a speech-generating device.
In this low-pressure environment, there are no expectations for the individual beyond using a method to clearly communicate their choice. This fosters a sense of safety and mutual respect, allowing them to understand that their voice matters and that their preferences are heard and honored. It lays the groundwork for trust and collaboration, rather than compliance.
This is just the first step in our comprehensive treatment process. Follow our page to learn more about the stages that follow, each designed to promote long-term independence, dignity, and meaningful social connection.
We take pride in utilizing practical, understandable, and effective treatment methods—and we look forward to making them accessible to the individuals and families seeking our care!
